Stranger Things has given us a lot. Synth-heavy soundtracks. Eleven. The single greatest needle drop of all time. But arguably the show's strongest asset is its villains. The Duffer Brothers know how to write a baddie, whether that's an interdimensional creature with no face or a human being who's somehow even worse.
Here's our definitive ranking of the best Stranger Things villains, from "creepy" to "genuinely ruined our sleep."
7. Dr. Martin Brenner
"Papa." The cold-eyed scientist who experimented on Eleven and called it parenting. Brenner doesn't have powers or claws, just a complete absence of empathy and an institutional budget.
Genuinely chilling because he feels real. The kind of antagonist who reminds you that the scariest monsters tend to wear lab coats.
6. Billy Hargrove
The Hawkins High bully with the muscle car and worse vibes. Billy works because he's awful and tragic at the same time. Dacre Montgomery played him like a hurt kid in a man's body, and by the time season three rolls around and his arc lands, it hits properly. One of the better villain-to-redemption pipelines on TV.
5. The Mind Flayer
A literal interdimensional hive mind that turns people into goo. Hard to argue with. The Mind Flayer's whole thing is scale, and the way the show kept making it bigger each season was a brilliant escalation move. The flesh monster in the cabin is the stuff of nightmares.
4. The Demogorgon
Upside Down phone case, available at Fun Cases
The OG. The petal-faced nightmare that started it all in season one and still gives people the ick when it appears on screen. Iconic silhouette, iconic kill scenes, iconic showdown with Eleven at the school.
The Demogorgon is the Stranger Things villain. Nothing else came close until season four.
3. The Demodogs
Just because they hunt in packs. Smaller, faster, scarier in groups. The pack chase scene in season two with Dustin and the gang in the tunnels is one of the most genuinely tense sequences in the entire show. The fact that Dart starts out as Dustin's pet just makes it worse.
2. Henry Creel / Number One / Vecna
Three names, one absolutely terrifying villain. Vecna doesn't just kill people, he gets inside their heads, finds their worst trauma, and weaponises it. The Max sequence with "Running Up That Hill" is arguably the best scene in the entire run. Vecna pulled Stranger Things into proper horror territory and the show was better for it.
1. The Russian Storyline (Special Mention)
OK, not technically a single villain, but the season three Russian arc gave us some genuinely menacing antagonists, including the absolute unit of a Terminator-style agent who chases Hopper across multiple episodes.
Plus, the Demogorgon-in-a-cage cliffhanger? Best stinger the show's ever done.
The Bad Guys Are The Reason We Stay
Stranger Things lives or dies on its villains. The Duffer Brothers know it. We know it. Without Vecna, the Demogorgon, and the rest, this would just be a show about kids riding bikes around a small town. Which is also fine, but slightly less terrifying.
If you want to wear the Upside Down on the outside, our Stranger Things phone case collection covers Eleven, Vecna, Hellfire Club references, and pretty much every era of the show. Pair with a season five rewatch.
