Modern Family ran for 250 episodes across 11 seasons, which is genuinely deranged for a sitcom that maintained quality the whole way through. The Pritchetts, Dunphys, and Tucker-Pritchetts gave us hundreds of hours of TV, and honestly, the rewatch value is unmatched.

Ranking the best episodes is impossible. So we did it anyway. Here are the best Modern Family episodes of all time, in vaguely defensible order.

1. "Las Vegas" (Season 5, Episode 18)

The entire family goes to Vegas. Jay is gambling, Phil meets his magic idol, Cam and Mitchell get into a hotel suite war with another couple, and absolutely everything goes wrong. It's the perfect Modern Family episode: chaotic, ensemble-led, and somehow heartwarming by the end.

Phil's magic trick reveal is one of the show's best gags ever.

2. "Connection Lost" (Season 6, Episode 16)

The bottle episode that takes place entirely on Claire's laptop screen. Way ahead of its time, brilliantly executed, and emotionally devastating in the back half. Claire trying to figure out where Haley is via FaceTime, iMessage, and Facebook is the kind of premise that shouldn't work and absolutely does. Award-winning for a reason.

3. "Pilot" (Season 1, Episode 1)

The one that started it all. The Lion King reveal at the end of the pilot is still one of the best closing scenes in sitcom history. Sets up every dynamic perfectly, and somehow makes you fall in love with twelve characters in 22 minutes.

4. "Fizbo" (Season 1, Episode 9)

The introduction of Cam's clown alter-ego Fizbo. The early seasons of Modern Family had a sweetness to them, and this episode is peak that.

Lily's birthday party turning into a series of escalating disasters is comedy gold.

5. "Goodnight Gracie" (Season 4, Episode 21)

The Dunphys travel to Florida for Phil's mother's funeral. Comedy can do grief better than drama sometimes, and this episode proves it. The scene with the goodnight ritual at the end will make you call your mum.

6. "Travels with Scout" (Season 2, Episode 17)

Phil's dad (Fred Willard) visits, brings his dog, and accidentally gets Phil emotional about his late mother. Fred Willard's appearances were always a highlight, and this one is the best of the lot. Pure tender Phil energy.

7. "Game Changer" (Season 1, Episode 19)

Phil wants an iPad for his birthday and the whole family pretends it's no big deal. The build-up, the betrayal, the eventual delivery: classic Phil character work. The episode that proved Modern Family knew exactly what kind of show it was.

8. "Express Christmas" (Season 3, Episode 10)

The entire family decides to do Christmas in a single day in November. Chaos ensues. Cam getting too into his role as Santa, Jay buying terrible presents, Claire losing the plot at the photo studio: this is festive Modern Family at peak form.

9. "Door to Door" (Season 4, Episode 4)

Three separate storylines hit emotional peaks at the same time and the editing ties it together beautifully. Modern Family was so good at this kind of structural choreography. Easy to underrate, brilliantly written.

10. "Finale Part 2" (Season 11, Episode 18)

The actual ending. Saying goodbye to characters you watched grow up over a decade hits harder than you think it will. No big plot twist, just a family slowly leaving the house. Made an entire generation of fans cry on a Wednesday night.

The Sitcom That Outlasted Them All

Modern Family worked because the cast had real chemistry and the writers actually liked the characters. Even the weaker seasons had standout episodes. It will be on streaming forever and that is correct.

If you want to keep the Pritchett-Dunphy energy alive in 2026, our Modern Family phone case collection has designs covering every iconic moment and character. Pair with a rewatch.
